Huerta Activism

Project developed within the 1st edition of the course Internet, Art, and Commitment at the Universidad Internacional del Mar, and selected through a competitive open call for exhibition at CreaMurcia 2017 in the Visual Arts category.

Huerta Activism is an art project conceived to seek new perspectives for raising awareness about the cultural and ecological value and potential of the Huerta de Murcia (the historic market-garden landscape). The project’s primary material consists of the design of more than forty memes that, through humor and irony, aim to draw the community’s attention to the urgent defense of the Murcian huerta against real-estate speculation. We did not limit ourselves to the digital realm: those memes were turned into physical, interchangeable, collectible trading cards in an album, and were also meant to be pasted in the streets as a more tangible form of activism. The project called for citizen collaboration both in creating additional memes and in giving them visibility across digital and physical space. In addition, we produced a collaborative Google Maps map documenting all intervened areas. The project was selected in the CreaMurcia 2017 competition, standing out as a creative, collective form of protest and cultural preservation.
